Are There Subliminal Messages In Advertisements?

How often do you think your brain is exposed to real subliminal messages? Some people believe that advertisers have been using these messages as a marketing tool to drive up sales for particular products, but it is quite uncertain whether it actually happens regularly or not.

The rule with these types of messages is that you are not intended to know they are being played. Whether it be a single word, a phrase, or even a picture, your subconscious mind will get the idea while you do not consciously know you are being spoken to.

Studies have shown in the past that when someone already has a goal in mind a related message that is subliminally embedded can actually influence their future decisions.

For instance, a diet product may become more attractive to someone who wants to lose weight if they are routinely flashed an embedded message about that diet product.

If advertisers are using this inventive technique to help brand products or make them more popular, it may be quite effective. In the future as technology progresses and there are more ways to imbed messages, the use may skyrocket.

Going a step further, do you really believe that your government could be using these types of messages to influence the population on key issues? Some people really believe this has happened, though it would be near impossible to ever verify.

There is no way to actually know how often you are being manipulated by cleverly placed subliminal messages. Advertisers obviously use the tactic of displaying logos and product jingles over and over until they become familiar, but it is not clear whether they are also using real embedded messages to influence consumer behavior. For the most part the messages would play into goals and desires you already hold and are harmless, so it is nothing you should spend much time worrying over.
